Marla Baggetta Pastel Demo
Marla Baggetta will be doing a demo exclusively for our MAPS members via Youtube Livelink from her studio on the West Coast. Members will be able to ask questions during her demo, and the demo link will be available exclusively for MAPS members for 2 months. Marla came to Richmond for a workshop with MAPS in May 2019 and she is a dynamic, encouraging instructor. Learn more about Marla and her art at marla baggetta.com. Paint-Out at Pony Pasture Rapids Park, Richmond
Join other MAPS members for an informal gathering to paint at Pony Pasture Rapids Park on the James River in Richmond from 9-12. Come when you want and leave when you want, enjoying the fall scenery and views of river rapids with other MAPS members, albeit properly socially distanced. The park has parking, bathrooms and walking trails, and can get busy on Saturdays, so masks would be appropriate if spectators are present. We will have water, bug spray and hand sanitizer for members - just look for our sign. Click here for some tips on what to bring to paint en plein air. Rain date for the paint-out will be Saturday, Oct. 31. |

Dakota Art Pastels Warehouse Tour and Product Showcase
MAPS Members will take a virtual Zoom tour of the Dakota Art Pastels warehouse in Mt. Vernon, Washington and see some of Dakota's best new available products. Dakota Art Pastels is one of pastel painters' best art supply resources since they specialize in art products for the pastelist, and also conduct workshops with many of the pastel world's best artists. In addition, they are now sponsoring a quarterly virtual pastel painting competition, judged by nationally known pastel masters. Dakota Pastels will give MAPS members a special 10% discount code that will be valid for one time use from Nov. 13 through the end of the year, and we'll send that to everyone at the time of the program. Mike Beeman Pastel Demo
Mike Beeman will be doing a live 2.5-3 hour demo via Zoom. He will demo preparing gator board for pastels, doing an underpainting on the prepared board, then the actual pastel painting (subject tbd, but most probably a still life or a bird. He will also have a short discussion/demo on framing passé partout. Members will be able to ask questions via "chat" during the demo. "Mike Beeman of Cheyenne, Wyoming, works in pastel and oil, in studio and on location, to paint a variety of subjects, including landscapes, still lifes and figures. He is a signature member of the American Impressionist Society, Pastel Society of America and a Master Circle artist in the International Association of Pastel Societies. Amy Shawley Paquette: Creating and Using Custom Surfaces for Pastels
Get ready to go beyond store-bought papers and boards and get adventurous with your pastel surfaces! Amy Shawley Paquette will show us how to create custom surfaces for pastels using a variety of textured gels and grounds on different substrates. She will also show us different underpainting techniques using the surfaces and demo how pastels will work on these surfaces.
Amy has been in Golden Paint’s Working Artist Program since 2008, teaching and lecturing in California and in the Mid-Atlantic region. “Amy Shawley Paquette is a visual artist whose painting, illustration, and jewelry is inspired by the natural world. MAPS Members Share Pastel Tips, Techniques & Tools
To wrap up our challenging virtual year, MAPS members will share via Zoom their pastel tips, techniques or tools in a "show and tell for adults" program. Do you have any workshop secrets you've learned, discovered new pastels or products, read an impactful art or pastel book, put together a great plein air setup, or anything else related to the pastel medium that other members can benefit from? Presenting members will receive a "token of appreciation" for helping our MAPS group learn something new.
