Member Meet & Greet; Judged Exhibit Award Winning Painting Discussion

We're kicking off the 2018-19 Program year with some member meet and greet time.  MAPS Executive Board members will provide light lunch.  Afterwards, members who received awards at our Annual Judged Exhibit at Reynolds Community College in May will share their award-winning paintings with the group and discuss their process.
Members enjoyed getting to know each other and finding out more about our members' award-winning paintings at our 9/28 meeting at Crossroads Art Center.
Saturday, Nov. 10th

Robin Caspari:  Composition & Using Notans and Thumbnails

Robin Caspari, local artist and teacher, will talk about composition in painting. We will be going high tech in this program so bring your tablets and phones to learn how to use them for Thumbnail sketches. Robin will be discussing the use of NOTANS for composition as well. We will be trying our hand at doing Notans.  Please bring images to work out composition, a sketchpad/paper, soft pencil and any "value" markers (such as Tombow pens) you have to the meeting.

Find out more about Robin Caspari at her website at
robincaspari.com.

Bonnie Kidd Carter & Janet Visser:  Unique Underpainting Techniques

Bonnie Kidd Carter and Janet Visser will discuss and demonstrate their unique process for preparing their surfaces for pastel work.  Bonnie Kidd Carter has been experimenting with the use of watercolor and inks on multimedia board for the past few years and has discovered a unique way to inspire her pastel work.  Janet Visser is a MAPS member who uses gold leaf in her pastel and mixed media paintings.

Get notes from Bonnie and Janet about their techniques on our For Members Only page.
Saturday, March 9th

Ed Tepper:  Getting the Most Out of Your Digital Camera

Ed Tepper, a professional photographer and photography teacher in Richmond, will help us to understand more about what our cameras can do and how we can take better reference photos to use with our studio paintings, including how we can compose with our cameras.  Please bring your digital cameras and instruction manuals to this meeting.  He plans to review basic settings for exposure, focus, and different lighting situations. He will also talk about composing images with our cameras.

We will then break up into smaller groups and find what options are available on our own cameras. Ed will help us to understand how we can utilize these options to make better images to work from in the studio. Bring your questions!

Ed Tepper is an independent photographer living in the Richmond, Virginia area specializing in professional headshots, real estate and sports & action photography.  Find out more about him at his website at www.edtepperphotography.com.

Great session on using our
cameras from Ed Tepper!

Art Supply Swap & Pastel Surfaces Discussion; Raffle prizes

Members will have a chance to swap and sell materials they no longer need or use, and we will have a review of pastel papers and demo on making your own pastel surfaces.

SWAP AND SELL:  We will have tables set up and have some tags and pens available for members to bring items that they wish to give away, sell or swap with other members. This is your chance to go through your studio cabinets and draws and make room for NEW art stuff!! Examples include frames, pastel papers and sets that you don't like or use, studio furniture (portable), etc. We will have time to look and bargain during lunch.

PASTEL SURFACE REVIEW:  Diane Worthington and Regina Tune will update the pastel paper information that they did with our former pastel group several years ago. They will go through the Dakota Pastel Catalogues ordered for our group and lead a discussion of "Papers that you love to HATE".  Come ready to talk about your favorite/least favorite surface(s) to work on with pastel.  Feel free to  bring examples if you want to show problems you had with a surface. They will have samples of some of the papers they discuss.

DEMO-MAKING PASTEL SURFACES:  Regina Tune will demonstrate several ways to make your own pastel surfaces.

THERE WILL BE RAFFLE PRIZES SO COME AND SHARE YOUR KNOWLEDGE ABOUT PASTEL PAPERS YOU LOVE TO HATE!!
