Still Life Pastel Demo - Julia Lesnichy

You’ll be in for a real treat if you attend MAP’s first program of 2016-17 year. We’ll be celebrating our one-year anniversary as an organization and also holding our first meeting at our new permanent venue—The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen.

Our first program is a pastel demo by Julia Lesnichy—a gifted, and versatile plein air impressionist painter who works with oils, pastels and oil pastels. Julia is an award-winning artist who has received 11 awards within the past 4 years for her pastel work including one from Pastel Magazine and 1 from Artist’s magazine this past year.

Plein air landscapes and still life paintings are among her favorite themes. Join us as she demonstrates a floral still life. You are not going to want to miss it! In the meantime, check out some of her art on her website at http://julialesnichyart.com.  We look forward to seeing you at the meeting!

Julia completed a beautiful still life painting in about ninety minutes!

This is your chance to ask a professional framer anything you ever wanted to know about framing so please come prepared with questions.

Custom Framing Made Simple is a "complete custom picture framing service that comes to you."  You can find more information about this framing service at customframingmadesimple.com.  Click here for a a tip from Richard on framing pastels.

This program will tap into the collective knowledge of our MAPS members.  Think show-and-tell for adults.  Do you have a tool that you can't live without?  Do you have tips/tricks you could do a mini demo on?  Maybe you have the secret to drawing realistic eyes or clouds.  Have you picked up something at a workshop that you can share?  How about a book or website recommendation?  Please email Finetta Milway by Dec. 19 with your topic ideas and how much time you'll need to share.

Pastel Portrait Demo - Emily Christoff-Flowers

Emily Christoff-Flowers graduated from Bowling Green State University in Ohio with a Bachelor’s in Fine Arts degree, with a focus in figurative drawing. After graduation she spent the next 25 years doing commission portrait work for a living. She is inspired by many artists but especially by Kehinde Wiley, Gustav Klimt, Robert Kushner and Phillip Pearlstein. Emily lives in Newport News, Virginia with her husband, son, a very smart python, an angry bearded dragon and one especially lazy cat.

“My pastel creations are truly a window into my world. The entire process, from taking the photographs, making the digital compositions, and then to creating the final piece by hand is exhilarating. I know immediately when I have captured something special to paint.”

Visit Emily's website at www.emilychristoff.com.

Members and their guests are invited to a plein air paint-out at Deep Run Park and Recreation Center in Henrico County, VA.  We've reserved Shelter 1, which is covered and has picnic table seating, with restrooms nearby.  You can paint in or from the shelter, or roam the park to find the perfect spot from which to paint.  There's a pond, woods and open areas near the shelter.  Come whenever you like and stay as long as you like.  Bring your pastels, easel and your lunch, and have some fun with your fellow MAPS members.

MAPS will supply bottled water.  Bring your own lunch, sunscreen and insect repellent.
