Debora Stewart Demo (Zoom) - Abstract Florals and Gardens

Flowers are a subject that I have always enjoyed. I’ve been creating art with flowers most of my adult life. I’ve drawn, painted watercolors and oils and now pastel. I combine my abstract technique with observational drawing to create abstract florals and gardens. I will demonstrate my process for you so you can try it yourself! For the last two years I have also been teaching Zoom workshops for artists on this subject and have worked with artists from the US as well as Australia, the UK and Canada. I hope you will join me for this demonstration so you can see what you can do with this wonderful subject. This program will be virtual using Zoom; the link will be emailed to Members.

​Jeri Greenberg Demo (Zoom) - Painting the Figure in an Interior Setting

MAPS member Jeri Greenberg will do a demo of an urban interior and figure, two of her favorite painting subjects, along with still life and fabrics. Pastel painting and teaching have become her “next act” after a career as a fashion illustrator, sportswear designer, and advertising. Jeri believes painters should have a strong drawing foundation down before working on colors. Jeri is one of 30 well-known pastelists teaching at the third annual Pastel Live global virtual art conference between August 17-19, 2023. This program will be virtual using Zoom; the link will be emailed to Members.

Jeanne Rosier Smith Demo (Zoom) - Sky+Sea: Painting Coastal Skies

​Skies figure large in the coastal landscape, so this demo focuses on creating striking skies, including tips for composing, reading and adjusting values from your photos, and how to create soft and hard edges for maximum atmosphere and drama. Tour of the Pastel Paintings at the Virginia Museum of Fine Art (In-Person)

We will view the pastel collection in the James and Frances McGlothlin exhibit and pastels in storage at the Virginia Museum of Fine Art (VMFA). This will be an in-person event. Christopher C. Oliver, Ph.D., Bev Perdue Jennings Associate Curator of American Art will be our guide.

Join us at 12 pm in the Best Cafe beforehand if you want to grab a quick lunch.

Live Evening Reception with Laura Pollak (Demo)

ROCK PAPER SCISSORS.
During this Demo, we will look at a landscape from ‘Out West’ and look at the lights and darks on the rocks and landforms.   Laura will do an exercise to isolate and group the lights from the darks, sort of cutting them apart. She will then proceed to do a quick block in painting quickly with large shapes, focusing on values.
